What is RSS?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. RSS is based on the XML programming language already used to create many websites, and allows website developers to post short summaries of recently updated information or information in great demand. These short summaries are scanned automatically by programs called RSS readers that deliver the information as a "feed" to interested readers.

What does RSS do for me?

RSS can deliver content of interest to you automatically. For information that changes frequently, RSS makes finding the new information in a timely matter easier.

How do I get started?

To use RSS, you will need to download a syndicated news reader. Readers are widely available on the internet, and many are free of charge. Some will even integrate the feeds you choose into your email program. Search for "RSS reader" on any web-based search engine and you will find a wide variety of RSS readers. Download the program of your choice, and follow its instructions for adding a feed to your reader program. RSS feeds are widely available on many state agency websites as well as other news sites.
